This afternoon as I wound my way through Grand Rapids’ cacophony of artwork and construction and blazing fall colors, I tuned my radio to an afternoon preacher I don’t often listen to.
He was expounding on the many subtle ways we allow the devil a foothold in our lives, and how even seemingly innocuous activities have the potential to erode our devotion to Christ—or at the very least, put a bushel over our Light.
Stop rolling your eyes and allow me to continue…
This is not to say that we should hole ourselves away and shut out the world, or that all things of this world are somehow inherently evil or sinful. Such a viewpoint infers that God created stumbling blocks intentionally to trip up our paths; Romans 8 assures us that God “works all things together for the good of those who love him,” so I do not espouse that perspective.
He went on to list how a pile of magazines/newspapers/internet draw our attention away from family, good works, and reading the Bible. AGAIN–I certainly am not opposed to media, whether print or digital, but I do acknowledge how distracted I become when a People magazine is within reach [don’t you?]. And while we’ll never have our nose in the Bible all the time [nor should we], I will attest to having recently been in a church where the reader could not find Exodus and had to ask Sunday School students to help him.
No judgment here. I’m just sayin’…a bit more Biblical literacy wouldn’t hurt, especially among regular church-goers.
Mr. Afternoon Pastor challenged us to consider how many hours we devote to work. To family life. To shopping. Are we in debt? Have we allowed our material possessions to own us rather than us owning them?
His list of 12 considerations froze my hands to the wheel. While I may not struggle with them all, I began to wonder:
- How much time do I waste each week…and then *scramble* to complete my Bible Study at the last minute? [Priorities!]
- What superfluous activities could be cut so that family time would enjoy a more easy pace?
- What are my values according to the Visa statement?
- Have I unknowingly allowed a beach head for Satan?
