Tonight was so perfect I nearly wept with joy at the giving heart of our good God. This Fourth of July encompassed the trifecta of delight that captured my heart: amazing food, summer weather begging to be bottled, and the kind of music that makes you dream about sand and heat and love when it’s new.
After having spent the day with our kids at small Independence Day Carnival and swimming at grandma’s, we returned home to salt and pepper the most gorgeous local Porterhouses you’ve ever seen. Assembling a summer music mix in between vegetable chopping added the most important ingredient of all: love. Fresh asparagus, roughly chopped sweet bells, purple onions, and mushrooms danced in olive oil and spices, ready for the grill. I pulled the bread from the oven, hot and steaming, butter unable to stand under the heat. Can you taste it?
The kids wiped down our patio furniture and brought out bowls of fruit and all the other small details demanded by such a feast. When my husband pulled our steaks off the grill and delivered them to the kitchen, I was compelled to sway, eyes closed, reveling in the joy that is supreme culinary deliciousness.
King Harvest had us all tapping to Dancing in the Moonlight after Bob Marley finished Waiting in Vain–a song that instantly transports me through time and zip codes to one of my favorite memories of all times.
Standing in the kitchen I was overcome with the kind of joy that hits you right in the heart: such gratitude for these small graces. For moments that ordinarily fade into the walls without a second thought. Moments that burn into my memory and make my heart pound with the knowledge that I am so undeserving.
And yet He gives.
Today I’m especially grateful for:
6. the luxury of exquisite proteins grown a zip code away
7. bountiful vegetables aflame with color
8. sharp hearing
9. music that sets my soul dancing
10. weather that belongs to July
11. the fireworks awaiting us
12. our service men and women who also give and give, often without our thanks.
What are you grateful for on this 4th of July?
