Luke 2:16-20 (NIV)
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
I love that Luke included this detail: that Mary treasured up these things and pondered them in her heart. That Mary took pictures with her mind and tucked away the secrets that only mothers know:
The curve of his cheek.
The rolls on chubby thighs.
The way he roots and waits for her.
Luke didn’t have to tell us this. It almost seems…incidental. Unnecessary.
Yet God ordained and lived in details such as this. He saw fit to include them to encourage us and remind us that Mary was a mother who loved deeply and saw her little boy fully.
What a wonder this Christmas!
What a sweet reminder for me to push aside the bows and wrappings…and do the same.
